DARSHAN ARATI

SADHANA - 7.00 AM

At around 7:00 am all the temples open their altars for devotees to greet the Deities that have been prepared for the new day

‘I have already acknowledged that the “Govindam” record is very nice, and I am sure it will be appreciated. Devananda also has liked it and says that the sound will be very attractive to the young people especially.’ (Srila Prabhupada’s letter to Syamasundara, February 25, 1970)

Darsan Arati is actually called Srngara Arati. This is the first time of the day when the Deities can be seen in Their fresh clothes that They will wear for the rest of the day. Usually, if one cannot rise early enough to perform Mangala Arati (preferably it is done until 6:00 AM), then they simplify their home program and start directly with Darsan Arati, skipping Mangala Arati. Of course, when it is possible, it is only beneficial to try to do both or only Mangala Arati but it is for each one to decide.

“Whoever cares for the Krishna consciousness movement can install Deities at home and under superior guidance, worship the Deity regularly, chanting the maha-mantra and discussing Bhagavad-gita and Srimad-Bhagavatam… One who feels that he is not yet ready to live in a temple or undergo strict regulative principles in the temple—especially householders who live with wife and children—can start a center at home by installing the Deity, worshiping the Lord morning and evening, chanting Hare Krishna and discussing Bhagavad-gita and Srimad-Bhagavatam. Anyone can do this at home without difficulty, and Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu requested the devotees present there to do so.”

(Caitanya-caritamrta Madhya 3.190, Purport)

You can perform Darsan Arati at home by worshiping your own Deities or pictures of any temple Deities or Sri Krishna. While you are performing the arati, the beautiful verses of Sri ‘Brahma Samhita are played and sung.

2) blow the conch 3 times:

3) sprinkle your hands, a bell and a mirror’s handle with acaman water, then, while ringing a bell in your left hand, offer the mirror to the Deities with your right hand (slowly showing Them how They are dressed: first Their feet, ankles, body, face and any hair dress), after that you can also adorn Them with fragrances/apply on Their bodies;

4) sprinkle all that you have used with acaman water, set it aside and sprinkle your hands;

THE ETERNAL FLAME OF GEORGE HARRISON

THE TUNE AND THE LYRICS

The song that is played at Darshan Arati consists of 2 verses from “Brahma Samhita”, a beautiful prayer spoken by Lord Brahma to Lord Govinda. It was performed by H.G. Yamuna Devi Dasi (H.D.G. A.C.B.S.) together with her godsisters and godbrothers at the studio of George Harrison in 1971, and this record became mandatory for Darshan Aratis at any ISKCON temple ever since.
You can view the video to learn the song.

THE FAMOUS “GOVINDA” SONG

BRAHMA SAMHITA VERSES ENGLISH TRANSLATION

“GOVINDA” ENGLISH TRANSLATION

1) I worship Govinda, the primeval Lord, who is adept in playing on His flute, with blooming eyes like lotus petals with head decked with peacock’s feather, with the figure of beauty tinged with the hue of blue clouds, and His unique loveliness charming millions of Cupids.

2) I worship Govinda, the primeval Lord, whose transcendental form is full of bliss, truth, substantiality and is thus full of the most dazzling splendor. Each of the limbs of that transcendental figure possesses in Himself, the full-fledged functions of all the organs, and eternally sees, maintains and manifests the infinite universes, both spiritual and mundane.
